Description

Wire Wool Spin
Northop, North Wales
19th April 2014

================

Equipment:
Camera (Nikon D3100)
Thin rope/thick string (I used rope)
Metal whisk
Wire wool
Lighter (long nozzled ones work best)
•Helper to spin the rope
•Bucket(s) of water

Technique:

1. Tie the rope/string tightly aorund the handle of the whisk. If it has a loop at the end of the handle, tie it to that instead.

2. Stuff some wire wool into the whisk, but leave a little bit of space.

3. Pull the wire wool apart while keeping it in the whisk - this helps oxygen reach the inside and help keep the wool alight.
4. Set up your camera (make sure it's dark!) on a tripod, or a flat surface. [I used setting such as 10 to 20s exposure time/shutter speed, f/11 and ISO 100].

5. Get your helper to stand at a safe distance from the camera

6. Ask them to test the spin of the rope - you don't want the spin circle too big or too small, but work out how far the sparks will fly - the bigger the spin circle, the further away the sparks will fly!

7. Use manual focus to set the focus on your subject - turn a torch on the subject if needed to help see them and focus the camera properly, then turn it off once focused. Make sure to turn OFF vibration reduction if your camera has this setting.

8. Put the 2s or 5s timer on - then click the shutter button as your helper ignites the wool using the lighter.

9. Your helper will then need to spin the rope in a consistently sized circle  - if they move too much the circle will overlap on itself. (Don't touch the camera until it has stopped taking the photo as this can cause motion blur)

10. Wait until the picture has finished taking and review it. It's up to you how you position your 'model' and any other props - just make sure to douse any flammable objects with water BEFORE you ignite & spin the wool.

11. Repeat and enjoy!
